And speaking of figuring things out, Apple didn't exactly help by naming its competing extender, which came out last year, 'Apple TV'. But that device is dead easy to use, because Apple makes the software and the hardware. It sells the movies that play on it.

The remotes for these devices are perhaps the best illustration of their differences. Apple TV's remote has six buttons. The DMA 2200's remote has 48, many of them with cryptic little symbols. There's a large numeric keypad, while the oft-used Back button is tiny.

Apple TV lets you watch iTunes movies and YouTube videos. The Windows extender shows some clips selected by Microsoft, and works with Web movie rental services like Vongo, each of which has its own, sometimes confusing interface.

The funny thing is that Microsoft does have its own online video rental service that's easy to use and works well, but it's only for the Xbox360 game console.

The 360 also can do everything an extender can, and it's only a little more expensive, so it looks like a good value. But the console's cooling fans sound like a miniature vacuum cleaner, so it's understandable if people who are not gamers balk at it.

Unlike most Xbox 360 models and the Apple TV, the extenders don't have their own hard drives – all the content is streamed from the PC the moment before it's shown on the TV set. That means the speed of the connection is critical.

The extender can connect to a router via Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet, but the connection between the router and the PC is equally important.

To determine the duration divide the memory capacity (number of samples the device can record) by the sample rate. As an example assume that a given data logger can store 10,000 samples. If it is desired to record 2 samples every minute, the data logger can run for 10,000/2 or 5,000 minutes (about 3.5 days). If the sample rate was cut in half (1 sample per minute), the recording period would double to 7 days.

Nasa found smallest black hole.

Nasa scientists have identified the smallest black hole ever found - less than four times the mass of our sun and about the size of a large city.

But the mini-black hole, dubbed J1650, could still stretch a person into a "strand of spaghetti" with its pull, the researchers told a meeting in Los Angeles.

This black hole is really pushing the limits. For many years astronomers have wanted to know the smallest possible size of a black hole.
It would likely be stronger than bigger black holes found at the centers of galaxies. If someone ventured too close to J1650, its gravity would "stretch your body into a strand of spaghetti".

Like other black holes, it was formed by a star that ran out of fuel and shut down, collapsing due to its own gravity.


It measures the oscillation of hot gas piling up near the black hole as it sucks in matter, they told a meeting in Los Angeles of the American Astronomical Society High-Energy Astrophysics Division.

The new black hole has a mass of 3.8 suns and would be about 15 miles across, they estimate. "This makes the black hole one of the smallest objects ever discovered outside our solar system," Shaposhnikov said.

The smallest black hole previously identified was GRO 1655-40, with a mass of about 6.3 Suns. "Amazingly, equations from Albert Einstein predict that a black hole with 3.8 times the mass of our sun would be only 15 miles across - the size of a city," Nasa said in a statement.

Paint to generate electricity

A lick of solar-power paint could see the roofs and walls of warehouses and other buildings generate electricity from the sun, if research by UK researchers pays off.

The scientists are developing a way to paint solar cells onto the steel sheets commonly used to clad large buildings. Steel sheets are painted rapidly in steel mills by passing them through rollers.

A consortium led by Swansea University, UK, hopes to use that process to cover steel sheets with a photovoltaic paint at up to 40 square metres per minute.




The paint will be based on dye-sensitised solar cells.

Instead of absorbing sunlight using silicon like conventional solar panels, they use dye molecules attached to particles of the titanium dioxide pigment used in paints.

While less efficient than conventional cells, dye-based cells do not require expensive silicon, and can be applied as a liquid paste.

It looks as if Zebronics actually beat Creative to the punch – the Gamma, with an integrated speaker, was released before the stone plus(ith speaker) put in an appearance. Of course I wasn’t able to pit the two against each other as we haven’t got the latter for review yet.

Form Factor
Even with the minimal information at hand, I can tell you that while the Gamma is as heavy as the Zen Stone Plus, it's smaller, though not slimmer. It has a 1-inch OLED dual color display encased in a very scratch-prone plastic screen. At the side of the screen is the integrated speaker and below that is the Play/Pause key, which also functions as a Power key.

On the top you’ll find a Power switch (real one this time!) followed by volume control keys and a Menu key. On the bottom are the navigation keys that let you skip tracks and adjust the volume. Beside them is a 3.5mm earphone socket. One side has a MiniUSB port and the other has a clasp to attach a neck strap or keychain.

Performance
The Gamma, which is compatible with MP3 and WMA formats, doesn't offer too many features. It has no radio or voice recorder. There's an external speaker, true, but it's not loud enough to entertain an audience. I wasn’t too happy with the bundled earphones. They were comfy in my ears but didn’t handle the volume very well when peaked. For some reason this seems to be a problem with a lot of the smaller companies and their players. I recommend that you get your own set of earphones. Even iPod earphones.

Navigation is a cinch once you get a hang of the controls. For additional control of music quality, you have the option to use the available EQ presets. Thankfully they do make a difference. Unfortunately the lack of a manually customizable EQ is a bit of a downer. Transferring files is easy since it’s a matter of a simple copy-paste, and the transfer itself is quick. Poor battery life is a major drawback – I was able to get only 8-9 hours of nonstop music and that just doesn’t cut it.

The Bottomline
Though the player is decently priced at around Rs 2,000 for 1GB, the poor battery life fouls up things. On the plus side it makes an affordable gift since the music output and quality aren't so bad. It’s small and lightweight and has a provision for a neck strap. So, on the whole, it’s an okay product.
