Lobsters
A police officer was driving his patrol car down next to a beach when he noticed a man knee deep in the water holding two red things, he wasn't sure what they were. The officer made his way down the sand to meet the man standing in the water. As he approached he noticed that the two red things were lobsters.
The officer said to the man "its illegal to be poaching for lobsters, you know".
"What are you talking about?" he said startled, "these are my pet lobsters".
"Sure they are!" replied the policeman.
"No, I'm serious. I will throw them into the waves and call them back. They will come".
"This I have to see". Chuckled the officer.
So the man launched the two lobsters back into the ocean and stood there watching them.
"I thought you said you could call those two lobsters back" said the cop.
"Lobsters?" replied the man, "what lobsters?

Friends help girls avoid abusive boyfriends
Having a strong circle of friends can help teenage girls avoid abusive relationships, US researchers said.
They said friends set the rules for dating, including those that determine when behaviour crosses the line into abuse.
"The group defines what normal behaviour is," said Sharyl Toscano of the University of Vermont, whose study on teen dating and violence appears in the journal BMC Nursing.
She said teenage girls tend to learn how to date during group outings, which offer protection from unwanted sexual advances. "By hanging out in this group, they all share these values," Toscano said in a telephone interview.
If abuse or rape occurs, a group of friends often tries to resolve problems before telling adults. When they can't, they reach out. "But they would only approach someone if they knew them personally," Toscano said.
She said parents should make an effort to know their daughter's friends. And they should take seriously any requests for intervention, because the group has likely already tried to solve the problem unsuccessfully.

Love in the time of climate change.
Thirty years ago there were only a handful of ways in which you could meet a girl. She would have to be your neighbour and you'd spy on her when she appeared on her balcony to hang the laundry. Or she would be standing at the bus stop near your home and you would see her every time you went to work. If you were more conservative, you would have met her at college. And if all else failed, you would ask your parents to introduce you to a nice, homely specimen. But ask Gen X, and they will tell you how hard it is to meet someone through those traditional means — few girls have time for the laundry, balconies have ceased to exist in space-starved cities and even if you're lucky enough to have one, you wouldn't have the time to look out of it. As for love at a bus stop, try a traffic jam instead.
So how and where do the love stories of the new millennium happen?
A flood of memories
Ayesha was struggling to stay above the floodwaters, by then well over six feet. She was swimming amid dead rats and drunk men. Her only companion was a journalist she's met at her office a few hours ago. "I was wondering if the night would end with me being raped," says the 25-year-old television professional who decided to walk to her Peddar Road home from her Andheri office.
By the time they reached Bandra, it was clear that going any further would involve risking her life. Her newly-found journalist friend suggested she spend the night at his home, but that was flooded too. Finally they sought refuge in his friend's house — a software consultant named Ashish Raikar. "She'd had an awful time but she was still smiling," remembers 29-year-old Raikar.
Despite the torrential rain and the unlikely setting, romance was born. "There were so many other people in the room, but the only thing that caught my eye in the candle light was Ayesha's nose ring," recalls Raikar. Over the next three days, the pair exchanged "nearly thousand" text messages. "Surprisingly, we had similar views on everything," says Choudhary.
They've been together for over two years now, and a December 2009 marriage is on the cards. "If it weren't for those floods, I'd have never met Ashish. It's strange to celebrate your anniversary on the 26th of July," says Choudhary.

Every time Caitlin Pinto read 'Your Dying Mother's' comments on Gigpad, an online forum for Indian rock fans, she was thoroughly disgusted. "He was rude, arrogant and insulted people without any provocation. Besides, what kind of person has a screen name like that?" she asks.

Sweet Old Couple Sharing.
A little old couple walked slowly into a McDonalds one cold winter evening. They looked out of place amid the young families and young couples eating there that night. Some of the customers looked admiringly at them. You could tell what the admirers were thinking. "Look, there is a couple who has been through a lot together, probably for 60 years or more!"
The little old man walked up to the cash register, placed his order with no hesitation and then paid for their meal. The couple took a table near the back wall and started taking food off of the tray. There was one hamburger, one order of french fries and one drink. The little old man unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut it in half. He placed one half in front of the little old lady. Then he carefully counted out the french fries, divided them in two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of her. He took a sip of the drink, and then she took a sip as the man began to eat his few bites. Again, you could tell what people around the old couple were thinking. "That poor old couple." As the old man began to eat his french fries, one young man stood and came over to the old couples' table.
He politely offered to buy another meal. The old man replied that they were just fine. They were used to sharing everything.
Then the crowd noticed that the little old lady hadn't eaten a thing...she just sat there watching him eat and occasionally sipped some of the drink. Again, the young man came over and begged them to let him buy them something to eat.
This time, the lady explained that no, they were used to sharing. As the little old man finished eating and was wiping his face neatly with a napkin, the young man could stand it no longer and asked again. After being politely refused again, he finally asked the little old lady, "Ma'am, why aren't you eating. You said that you share everything. What is it that you are waiting for?" She answered....

Withdrawing a slide rule from his pocket, the patient calculates rapidly, then swiftly packs up all his tools and turns back to the pedestrian, saying, "It is now precisely 3:29 pm, provided today is August 16th, which I believe it is."
The man can't help but be impressed by this demonstration, and sets his watch accordingly.
Before he leaves, he says to the patient, "That was really quite remarkable, but tell me, what do you do on a cloudy day, or at night, when the stick casts no shadow?" The patient holds up his wrist and says, "I suppose I'd just look at my watch."

Vitamin C ......helpful in cancer.
Vitamin C can help to prevent cancer, but not the way that scientists thought, according to a study published Monday in the US.
Scientists have long thought that vitamin C and other antioxidants help to fight cancer growth by grabbing volatile oxygen free radical molecules and preventing them doing damage to DNA. But researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore found that antioxidants play a different role in the fight: they destabilize a tumor's ability to grow under oxygen-starved conditions.
The researchers happened on this new role by observing mice which had been implanted with one of two types of cancer which produce high levels of free radicals, which can be suppressed by feeding the mice supplements of antioxidants, such as vitamin C.
When the Hopkins team examined cancer cells from mice that had been implanted with cancer but not fed antioxidants, they noticed there was no significant DNA damage.
"If DNA damage was not in play as a cause of the cancer, then whatever the antioxidants were doing to help was also not related to DNA damage," said Ping Gao, one author of the study.
That conclusion led Gao and Dang to suspect that some other mechanism was involved, such as a protein known to be dependent on free radicals called HIF-1 (hypoxia-induced factor). The researchers found that HIF-1 was abundant in untreated cancer cells taken from the mice, but disappeared in vitamin C-treated cells.
"HIF-1 helps an oxygen-starved cell convert sugar to energy without using oxygen and also initiates the construction of new blood vessels to bring in a fresh oxygen supply," explained Chi Dang, who also worked on the research.

Chronic sleep deprivation is increasingly damaging the male libido and triggering erection problems, a sex researcher has warned at an international sleep conference.
The Brazilian sexual health specialist, Professor Monica Andersen, says the increasing pace of the modern world is taking a toll on hours of sleep and is having a direct knock-on impact on sex. There is an increasing body of evidence showing those who don't sleep enough are suffering lower libidos and, in many cases, are also suffering erectile dysfunction. And in a very few number of men, this lack of sleep is triggering a rare and disturbing condition called sleep sex, or sexsomnia, when their libido is heightened and they initiate sex while asleep.
"Not getting enough sleep can be very, very damaging on the male sex life but it seems this hasn't actually occurred to many people.Hence their is close links between sleep and sex.
Studies have proven that those who are sleep deprived, particularly those with disrupted body clocks, have a much poorer libido in general.
The same complaints come from men with the night-time breathing problem, sleep apnoea, who need treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) to help restore their erectile function.
This is a sad product of the busy 24-hour life that we're living now.
People's body clocks are out, they're not prioritising their sleep and their sex life is suffering. The problem is that people are very aware of their sexual life but they don't seem to be aware of the massive impact that their sleeping patterns are having on it.
If they have poor libido or erection problems they blame work, money problems, children, family or other things going on around them without even thinking of sleep.In the rare circumstances a lack of sleep could trigger sexsomnia, an unusual condition where sufferers, usually men, seek out and have sex in their sleep.

Avionics researchers at Ohio University are working hard to make such air travel easier — and safer — for passengers, pilots, and airport officials. SMOOTH LANDING :
When a pilot lands a plane in the midst of a Chicago rain storm, it isn’t because the aircraft has giant windshield wipers. Dials in the sea of cockpit instruments, operated by radio waves transmitted from the airport, tell the pilot exactly where the aircraftneeds to be to meet the runway.
Ohio University engineers develop models that help explain how that process can go wrong: Electromagnetic signals can scatter — bouncing off buildings, air traffic control towers, trucks, and the ground — and provide inaccurate information. When the aircraft receives incorrect guidance, it may instruct the pilot to fly into a parking lot or corn field, and not the final destination.
